Calculating stump volume
There are two pieces of information available about stumps: top diameter (r) and height (h). Using these data, stump volume is calculated using the formula applicable to cylinders with a circular base.
where:
V is the wood volume of the stump,
r is the measured top diameter of the stump,
h is the measured height of the stump.
The volume calculated this way is underestimated, as the buttressness of stumps can be quite significant, and the surplus volume due to that factor is ignored for the purposes of calculated volume. Please, note that the records also neglect the underground section of stumps. If the relationship reflecting the degree of buttressness is available, the precision of wood volume calculations may improved.
